Clemson Tigers head football coach Dabo Swinney has been the butt of many jokes over the years since his last national championship. However, one thing is certain, Swinney is one of two active head coaches with multiple national titles joined by Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. But it has been since 2019 that the Tigers last played for a title and since 2018 that they won one.
Since Clemson was last on top of the college football world with two national titles and two other appearances in the title game, the landscape of the game has completely shifted. The emergence of the transfer portal and name, image, and likeness has forced coaches and schools to change their approach. It feels as though Dabo Swinney has stubbornly stuck to his ways that led to a great run during the 2015 and 2019 seasons. The move announced on Friday might be a sign of change to come.
With longtime NFL scouting director Kevin Kelly joining the program, it certainly raises a few eyebrows. It appears that Clemson and more importantly Dabo Swinney are ready to get into the heavyweight fight with man of the top programs around the country. Kelly will serve as the Director of Player Evaluation and Acquisition.
“I’m super excited to have Kevin Kelly joining our staff,” Swinney said of the hiring. “To be able to add someone with his experience is a great benefit to Clemson. He’s got over 20 years of front office experience in scouting and evaluation of player personnel, so he will bring a wealth of experience and be able to work alongside General Manager Jordan Sorrells, Director of Recruiting Ty Clements and the rest of our staff on player acquisition, evaluation and retention.”
