NEW ROCHELLE – Crew Davis is known across two sports for his ability to make things happen.
In a hurry.
The 17-year-old Iona Prep junior has always embraced a take-the-ball-and-run-with-it approach, so it’s no surprise he made a decision on the fly last weekend and committed to play football and lacrosse at the University of North Carolina following an official visit to the Chapel Hill campus.
Yes, there was an official audience with new Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick, too.
“It was actually funny, I was with the lacrosse guys on Friday and coach Belichick left whatever he was doing and came to meet with me,” Davis said. “He thought I was only going to be at Junior Day on Saturday, but we ended up talking for like 20 minutes.”
The conversation resumed some 24 hours later.
“I got to see the football facilities on Saturday and had another pretty good talk with coach Belichick, and that’s when I told him I was committing.”
Crew Davis will play lacrosse, and football too
Davis checked in with Joe Breschi and the UNC lacrosse coaches on Sunday and let them know he was all in with them, as well.
“The biggest thing I wanted from the visit was reassurance the football side was real,” Davis added. “Based on where I am with lacrosse, I knew that was real. I’ve been talking with the lacrosse coaches for a while. I didn’t know how it was going to go down, and then coach Belichick let me know he thought I could benefit the program as a running back.”
For the first time in his life, Davis got weak in the knees.
“Growing up, I was actually a diehard Patriots fan,” Davis said. “I have a clear memory of watching them play the Falcons in the Super Bowl and having a pillow over my face crying, thinking, we were going to lose.”
