Jerry Lawson has earned the right to play football.
When he was in fourth grade, the new Louisville Cardinal said he wanted to play tackle — not flag — football. So Victor Lawson took his son out in the rain and told him that if Jerry could run through him, Victor would fully support a football career.
After all, it’s in Jerry’s blood: His maternal grandfather, Buddy Robertson, played running back at Texas Tech. Determined to continue the family legacy, Jerry attempted to get past his father. After 10 or 11 times, he prevailed.
“He was fussing and trying to get through. … Finally, he got through,” Victor recalled. “And (Jerry) was like, ‘Touchdown.’”
As a fifth grader, Jerry was temporarily stopped from playing football during a game. Because Jerry was bigger than the other kids, Victor had to prove Jerry’s age by providing his birth certificate. Jerry also had to be under 45 pounds. He qualified by tenths of a pound.
The next hurdle was asthma. When he first started playing football, Jerry had to take breathing treatments and underwent an adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy. When he got to Breckenridge (Texas) High School, he no longer needed the treatments and was a four-year, two-way starter.
Leaning on his faith, Lawson has successfully responded to every challenge football has thrown his way. Next up is earning a starting job at Louisville with three vacant starting spots on the defensive line after Ashton Gillotte, Ramon Puryear and Dez Tell graduated. The Texan has the potential to play inside and outside for the Cardinals after doing that at Abilene Christian University. Last year, Lawson started six games at right tackle, three games apiece at left end and left tackle and two games at right end.
