What West Alabama coach Scott Cochran learned from Alabama football-to-Georgia transition

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Scott Cochran is in a completely different place than when he last moved college football programs.

After spending 2007-19 in Tuscaloosa as Nick Saban’s strength and conditioning coach for Alabama football, Cochran was hired as Georgia’s special teams coordinator, spending three seasons on former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart’s staff.

As he transitions to his first head coaching role at West Alabama, Cochran said the lessons he learned from his transition from Alabama to Georgia still apply.

“I don’t have to be anything that I’m not is probably the biggest lesson I learned,” Cochran said. “I think going there, I was so worried about proving that I could be the special teams coordinator that I drove myself crazy mentally. I was proving that I had to sign the best players because I had to prove (it) to somebody. I don’t see it that way anymore, so that’s a big lesson for me is that if I’m good enough, I’m good enough, right?”

Cochran has been public about his recovery from a painkiller addiction, one he was sober for for two years before a relapse. Cochran stepped away from the Georgia staff after the 2023 season

Cochran runs the nonprofit organization, the American Addiction Recovery Association, to help others get to where he currently is.

“Now I feel completely different,” Cochran said. “And my walk with God and my recover is just on fire. So I’m just spread that word.”

That lesson he learned from his transition from Alabama to Georgia is one he plans to share with West Alabama, saying that if they are good enough, they are going to play.

For Cochran, it’s a completely different mindset than what he’s had before.
