15 Years later, Pete Carroll is still helping USC

It has been more than 15 years since Pete Carroll left USC. Even now, the legendary head coach is still helping the Trojans. This past week, Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders hired Deland McCullough as the team’s running back coach. McCullough comes to Vegas from Notre Dame, where he coached the position for the past three years.

USC fans have been familiar with McCullough for a while. In 2017, he served as the Trojans’ running backs coach, coaching star back Ronald Jones II to a historic season in which he recorded 1,550 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. He left USC for the Kansas City Chiefs following that year, where he was on the staff that won Super Bowl LIV.

McCullough is viewed as one of the top running back coaches in the sport. Hence, the fact that he will no longer be coaching USC’s biggest rival—and the Trojans will not have to face him in 2025—is a significant victory for USC, and one they can thank Carroll for.

In Vegas, McCullough will join a loaded staff with significant experience at both the college and NFL levels. In addition to Carroll, he will work with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who previously served as the head coach at both Oregon and UCLA. Kelly took the Ducks to the national title game in 2010, and won a national championship as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State this past season.
