Clemson football hired Kevin Kelly as its director of player evaluation and acquisition on Friday.

Kelly has more than 20 years of NFL experience as a talent evaluator, including the past 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Clemson University Board of Trustees compensation committee finalized the hire on Friday, and he will earn $360,000 annually over two years.

“I’m super excited to have Kevin Kelly joining our staff,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in a school release. “To be able to add someone with his experience is a great benefit to Clemson. He’s got over 20 years of front office experience in scouting and evaluation of player personnel, so he will bring a wealth of experience and be able to work alongside General Manager Jordan Sorrells, Director of Recruiting Ty Clements and the rest of our staff on player acquisition, evaluation and retention.”

Clemson also announced that tight ends coach Kyle Richardson, wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham and running backs coach C.J. Spiller have received raises and an extra year on their deals. Richardson’s salary increased from $600,000 to $637,500. Grisham and Spiller’s pay increased from $550,000 to $575,000.

Clemson has five assistants making at least $1 million. Its total assistant coach pay is $10.538 million in 2025. It was third in FBS in assistant coach pay last year at $9.675 million, according to USA TODAY Sports’ annual analysis of assistant coach compensation.

New defensive coordinator Tom Allen is Clemson’s highest-paid assistant. He agreed to a three-year deal worth $6 million with Clemson in January, making $1.9 million in 2025.

Riley agreed to a three-year deal worth $1.75 million annually when he was hired in January 2023 and received a one-year extension a year ago.
