Michigan State football adds 4-star TE Edward Whiting to continue 2026 recruiting momentum

Michigan State football has landed its second commitment for the 2026 recruiting class in the last 24 hours.

Four-star tight end Edward Whiting out of Sioux Fall, South Dakota, committed to play for Jonathan Smith and the Spartans on Saturday morning.

Whiting is listed the 18th-ranked tight end in the nation, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, and is ranked as the 357th ranked player in the country. The tight end is listed at 6 feet 6, 230 pounds and according to his bio on “X,” he has a 6-10 wingspan and also plays basketball and runs track.

He also reportedly had offers from Michigan, Florida, UCLA and a number of other schools.

Whiting would’ve been one of the highest-ranked players in the Spartans’ 2025 class. After a somewhat underwhelming 2025 class that ranked 56th in the nation on 247 Sports’ composite rankings, it appears Smith and Co. have turned their attention to the 2026 class well before the 2025 season even gets underway.

Jefferson tight end Edward Whiting (8) catches the ball for the touchdown on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

THE OTHER RECENT RECRUIT: Michigan State football recruiting: 2026 East Kentwood QB Kayd Coffman commits

On Friday, the Spartans landed a commitment from in-state quarterback Kayd Coffman, a three-star quarterback out of East Kentwood High School. Coffman reportedly chose the Spartans over Central Michigan, Bowling Green, Cincinnati and Duke.

Whiting is actually the second tight end commit the Spartans have gotten in their 2026 class. The only other commitment MSU has besides Whiting and Coffman is from Joey Caudill, a 6-foot-5 tight end out of Lexington High School in Mansfield, Ohio.

Caudill is a three-star prospect who reportedly had offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland and others.
