Some teams struggle at the beginning of a season as they look for ways to revamp their squads from the previous year. But the Hutchinson Tigers gridders have been able to reload and continue their dominance in the Wright County Conference.
After a big score in week one, the Tigers (2-0) followed suit with another crushing victory, this time over Mound Westonka (1-1) 49-7.
“I thought tonight we played a better team than we played last week,” Hutchinson coach Andy Rostberg said. “Mound has got some athletes, defensively and offensively. Our defense, half way through the game, had given up about 30 yards of offense. Offensively, we were 10-for-11 throwing tonight. We worked on that and did a nice job.
“Our backs ran hard, but there wasn’t any big gaping holes. We’ve got to get a little bit more physical offensively.”
The game was basically over at halftime as Hutch’s offense imposed its will with touchdowns on all six possessions in the first half.
Jayden Fleck struck first for the with a one-yard dive which capped off a 66-yard drive, and then Robbie Grimsley punched in a score on the next possession from five yards out to take a 14-0 lead. Grimsley added another touchdown early in the second quarter, giving the Tigers a comfortable 21-0 lead.
The defense set up the next score for the Tigers after Keegan Macemon’s 36-yard interception return led to Fleck’s two-yard touchdown run.
Hutch wasn’t done, though, as Quarterback Marcus Hahn hooked up with Riley Steenhoek on a third-and-goal touchdown pass from the one-yard line, and then Grimsley added another five-yard touchdown for his third of the game.
