WIAA officials, area coaches react to passing of new high school football playoff process

Qualifying for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s high school football postseason will look slightly different in 2025 and beyond, after a Wisconsin Football Coaches Association-proposed Football Playoff Matrix was approved Wednesday by the WIAA Board of Control.

The plan, inspired by a similar plan used for over three decades by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, weighs a team’s defeated opponents by metrics designed to account for divisional and performance strength. Teams are divided into seven 52-team divisions based on enrollment. A team’s defeated opponents are scored on a scale of 3.5 for Division 7 opponents up to 6.5 for Division 1 opponents. That number is then divided by the total number of games played to calculate the first of two tiers toward a team’s playoff eligibility. The second tier adds the Tier 1 scores of all opponents together, divides that number by the number of total games played by those opponents and then multiplies it by nine to achieve the Tier 2 score. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 scores are then added together, forming a team’s total score toward playoff qualification. The top 32 teams in each 11-player division qualify for the postseason. This part of the plan was approved in a 10-1 vote.

Regional bracket pairings to minimize travel distance were also a crucial component of the plan passed in a separate vote of the Board of Control, which went 8-3 in favor.

In an additional action Wednesday, the WIAA Board of Control also approved an expanded playoff field for 8-player football, expanding to 32 teams with an 11-0 vote. All changes will take effect for the 2025 season.

Here is a roundup of some of the local and WIAA reactions to the approval of the plan.
