The Oregon Ducks got some significant news on Sunday morning, with reports coming out that wide receiver coach and co-offensive coordinator Junior Adams would be leaving Eugene to take over as the new WR coach with the Dallas Cowboys.
Since 2004, Adams has coached wide receivers and offensive coordinators at the college level, most recently with the Washington Huskies, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Boise State Broncos, and Eastern Washington Eagles. During this time, he has developed some incredible receivers, including Los Angeles Rams stars Cooper Kupp and Puka Nakua, as well as Oregon’s Troy Franklin, Tez Johnson, Traeshon Holden, and Evan Stewart.
While this is undoubtedly a great move in the career path for Adams, who finally is cracking the ranks of the NFL, it leaves the Ducks in a tough position, having to replace arguably the best position coach on their staff. It isn’t the first time that head coach Dan Lanning has had to replace a talented position coach, but it is a hire that will be crucial to get right as the Ducks continue to ascend in the Big Ten.
Let’s take a look at some major ways that this change will have an impact on the current and future Oregon roster.
Oregon Wide Receiver Talent Development
Junior Adams has long been considered one of the best WR talent developers in all of college football, getting the most out of unsung recruits and turning them into NFL stars. Look at Kupp with Eastern Washington, and Nakua with the Washington Huskies. See how he turned guys like Rome Odunze, Franklin, and Johnson into stars with just a couple of years of coaching.
Now look at the abundance of talent that Oregon has on the current roster at the WR position. Not having Adams coach them up will be significant. That’s not to say that whoever Lanning hires in Adams’ place can’t be just as good, but for guys like…
