Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has dealt with the process of having a position coach leave for a higher-paying job and further his career before. On Sunday morning, however, it became public that Lanning would likely have to spend the next few weeks trying to replace one of the best coaches on his staff.
According to multiple reports, wide receivers coach Junior Adams is expected to leave Oregon and take over in the same role with the Dallas Cowboys, heading off to the NFL for the first time in his career and joining Brian Schottenheimer’s staff in the Lone Star State. While the news has not yet been finalized, it is progressing to a place where the Ducks will be searching for a new WR coach in the near future.
Since 2004, Adams has coached wide receivers and served as an offensive coordinator at the college level, most recently with the Washington Huskies, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Boise State Broncos, and Eastern Washington Eagles. During this time, he has developed some incredible receivers, including Los Angeles Rams stars Cooper Kupp and Puka Nakua, as well as Oregon’s Troy Franklin, Tez Johnson, Traeshon Holden, and Evan Stewart.
Just as important as his developmental abilities is his recruiting acumen. At Oregon, Adams has been one of the most successful recruiters on the staff, helping the Ducks land the likes of 5-star WR Jurrion Dickey, 5-star WR Dakorien Moore, and 5-star WR Gatlin Bair.
It’s indisputable that this move for Adams would be a positive development in his career trajectory, and Duck fans should be thrilled to see him move up the ladder. Meanwhile, it would also leave Oregon in a position where they have to try and fill his shoes with a hire this spring.
Fortunately, the Ducks are in a unique position to have a ton of flexibility when it comes to which way they want to proceed.
A year…
