Clemson football will hire former East Carolina coach Mike Houston as a defensive analyst, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Houston coached the Pirates for six seasons from 2019 through 2024. He was fired after a 3-4 start last season. He had a 27-38 record at East Carolina.
Houston began coaching in 1994, having stints at North Carolina high schools, including 10 seasons at Roberson in Asheville, before reaching the college ranks in 2006. He served as a defensive coordinator for Brevard, a Division III program, in 2006 and Lenoir-Rhyne, a Division II program, from 2007 through 2010.
Houston became a head coach in 2011, leading Lenoir-Rhyne then The Citadel (2014-15), James Madison (2016-18) and East Carolina. He won an FCS national championship with James Madison in 2016 and has a career coaching record of 106-62.
Houston will work with Clemson’s new defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Houston is the second analyst to be hired by Clemson in the past five days, joining offensive analyst Lonnie Galloway.
Clemson begins spring practice on Feb. 28, and its spring game is April 5 (1 p.m. ET) at Memorial Stadium.
