Ohio State is set to promote tight ends coach Keenan Bailey to co-offensive coordinator, according to ESPN.
In an expanded role with the Buckeyes, he will continue to coach tight ends and work with Brian Hartline, the wide receivers coach who is in line to be the primary offensive coordinator following Chip Kelly’s departure for the NFL.
Aug 1, 2024; Columbus, OH, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes tight ends coach Keenan Bailey works with players during football camp at the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.
The 29-year-old Bailey has been on staff since 2016, working with multiple position groups as part of the support staff before he was elevated to a full-time position coach two years ago.
Bailey has been the tight ends coach the past two seasons and helped to increase their role in the passing game. Cade Stover’s 41 receptions in 2023 were the most in a single season by an Ohio State tight end in four decades.
It’s also a position group that expects to be deep next season with the arrival of Purdue transfer tight end Max Klare and return of Will Kacmarek, as well as Bennett Christian and Jelani Thurman.
The Buckeyes had two assistants with offensive coordinator titles last season with Kelly being the main play-caller and Hartline in the role as a co-coordinator.
Coach Ryan Day said Friday that he was close to finalizing Hartline’s promotion and hoped to have “everything out there” by the beginning of this week.
None of the Buckeyes’ expected hires on the offensive side of the ball, including adding Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen as offensive line coach, have been made official by the school.
Day is left with a hire to make to replace Jim Knowles as the defensive coordinator after he left for the same role at Penn State last month.
