Just weeks after Texas A&M hired Mike Elko as the program’s newest head football coach, the veteran defensive coordinator was tasked with closing out the Aggies’ 2024 recruiting class that Jimbo Fisher nearly completed. However, keeping four-star linebacker and Tupelo, Mississippi native Tristan Jernigan, to sign on the dotted line remained challenging.
In the final weeks of December, Alabama attempted to flip Jernigan away from the Aggies, but thanks to Elko and DC Jay Bateman’s closing abilities, the future contributor is heading into his second season with the program and is looking to see the field in 2025.
One of his teammates, 2026 four-star defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy, recently decommitted from LSU earlier this month. This week, it was reported that Texas A&M has reached out to the talented defender, setting up a future official visit to College Station shortly, likely this summer.
I expect LSU to continue pursuing McCoy, but Alabama and Ole Miss are other programs to watch. Knowing Elko and his talented defensive staff’s success in landing elite defensive line prospects, the Aggies should be a major player in McCoy’s recruitment in the future.
However, Alabama was not listed as one of his four future official visits, as LSU, Ole Miss, and Florida round out this list provided by On3.
After recording 11 sacks and 23 tackles for loss during his 2023 sophomore season, McCoy finished with 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in 2024.
According to 247Sports Composite, JaReylan McCoy is currently positioned as the 79th-ranked prospect in the 2026 cycle, the 6th-ranked defensive lineman, and the 5th-ranked prospect in Mississippi.
