Ask me to pick a second career for Jim Tressel and I would probably go with college professor. His signature sweater vest and tie gave him the look.

Turns out, the former Ohio State coach, who led the Buckeyes to a national title, had another plan in mind. Actually, two.

He spent time at Youngstown State as the school’s president, taking over in 2014. That followed a 10-year run as Ohio State football boss. Other than an ill-advised timeout against Illinois in 2007, Tressel was a hit with the Buckeyes.

His next venture, apparently, will be as Ohio’s lieutenant governor. He was nominated by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday and figures to be approved by the state’s house and senate. It would be difficult to reject a guy who won the big trophy.

Tressel’s move might leave to an even bigger job. DeWine is term-limited, so that the state will soon need somebody to take his place.

The move up from lieutenant governor seems like a logical step.

There are endless examples of former athletes/coaches going into politics. Bill Bradley went from basketball star to New Jersey Senator. Gerald Ford played football at Michigan before replacing Richard Nixon in the White House. Pro quarterback Jack Kemp was a long-term congressman and ran for Vice President. Longtime Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne served in congress and ran for governor. The list goes on and on. Now Tressel is part of it too.,

What kind of politician will he be? Well, prepared him for some of the hard moments. He has been booed by full stadiums. So, a little squabble with a state rep won’t be a big deal.
