Former Notre Dame coach return to college after one year in the NFL

You can never fault a coach for leaving any collegiate program to try and make it at the highest level, which is exactly what Chris O’Leary did went he left Notre Dame to become the safeties coach with the Los Angeles Chargers.

His stint in the NFL did not last long, even though it was productive after seeing Derwin James Jr. being named as an All-Pro, while making the playoffs. O’Leary was named as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach for the Western Michigan Broncos on Tuesday, reuniting with head coach Lance Taylor.

While the two of them were only on the Irish staff together from 2019-2021, they clearly had a great working relationship that will carry over with the Broncos. O’Leary is viewed as a young coach on the rise in the profession, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that he’ll have this opportunity in front of him.

Congrats to Chris, as we hope that the former Notre Dame assistants have plenty of success with Western Michigan.
