High school football: Benjamin announces former NFL player as next head coach

A former NFL player is set to lead the next chapter of Benjamin football.

Jason Belser, who played with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs, was announced Tuesday as the Bucs’ next football coach. He will begin the job March 1 and follows longtime head coach Eric Kresser.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Belser to The Benjamin School community,” Benjamin athletic director Ryan Smith said in a statement. “He brings incredible experience as a player, coach, and professional. His connections through these experiences in college and professional football are vast, this will give our school, athletic department, and student-athletes many opportunities.”

Prior to his professional career, Belser was a team captain for an Oklahoma Sooners squad and played defensive back. He was selected in the eighth round of the 1992 NFL Draft.

In addition to being named as a finalist for the NFL Man of the Year Award as well as the Walter Payton Award, Belser also served as a member of the NFL Players Association for 11 years, acting as an advocate for player safety.

With the Colts, he played in the AFC Championship Game, continuing to serve as a team captain across nine years with the team.

Prior to taking his new role with Benjamin, Belser coached high school football in Texas and Virginia.

The Benjamin School announced that there were 230 applicants for the position.

Trenton Saunders was also announced as the school’s next offensive line coach in a move Smith described as bringing “the best offensive line coach in the state” to Benjamin.
