‘I really am very proud of him.’ Mark Richt on his son, Jon, becoming Prince Avenue coach

Mark Richt was scurrying around the country recruiting in 1990 as the new quarterbacks coach at FSU when he landed in Marietta to watch Eric Zeier throw the ball around.

He met with Blue Devils’ coach, Dexter Wood, who had an eight-year run as the head coach of the Cobb County school.

Although Richt was just in the early stages of his coaching career, the hectic life of travel, coaching and recruiting was already taking its toll.

“I remembered visiting the school and the coach had been there a long time,” Richt recalled Tuesday to the Athens Banner-Herald. “I kind of envied his lifestyle. Being able to plant roots and being a part of the community. Jon’s getting to do that.”

Jon is his son, who on Monday was named Prince Avenue’s head coach after a five-year run as the school’s offensive coordinator. In that span, he helped lead the Wolverines to three state titles and a pair of runner-up finishes. He takes over for Greg Vandagriff, who stepped down after a nine-year run and a 107-16 record.

Florida State missed out on Zeier, who became a legend for Georgia football. But the memories like that day at Marietta have been shared with Jon, who served as an offensive assistant in 2015 with the NFL’s Bills and under Mark as a QB coach at Miami.

The lifestyle of a college coach can be challenging, especially in the days of big-money NIL and transfer portals.

“Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for,” Mark Richt said. “A lot of coaches think that’s what you want to do, but I know just as many that want to get out of it….
