Auburn defensive coordinator DJ Durkin signed a short but lucrative extension on February 5, making the coach one of the highest paid assistants in the country. The new contract, which runs through 2027, increases the defensive coordinator’s salary from $1.2 Million to $2.5 Million in 2025, $2.7 Million in 2026, and $2.9 Million in 2027.
Durkin is now the second-highest paid defensive coordinator in the country, trailing only new Penn State hire Jim Knowles and his $3.1 Million contract. Knowles, who was earning $2.2 Million a year with Ohio State before taking the job in rival Happy Valley, could also earn bonuses raising his contract value closer to $4 Million per year.
The pay raise is certainly warranted, especially considering Auburn may have won even less games a season ago if not for Durkin’s young defense coming together as the campaign trekked into the winter months. According to USA TODAY’s assistant coach salary database, Durkin will now join an exclusive list of just 10 assistant coaches making north of $2 Million per year.
LSU’s Blake Baker, Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding, and Georgia head defensive man Glenn Schumann are the only other coaches from the conference on the list. As for Auburn, Durkin is now widely ahead of the rest of the supporting staff in salary, with offensive coordinator Derrick Nix placing second with an $800,000 salary.
