Iowa State football is losing a key member of its coaching staff as assistant head coach and running backs coach Tyler Roehl is expected to be hired as an offensive assistant coach for the Detroit Lions. The move was reported first by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and later confirmed to the Register by Iowa State Athletics.
Before joining the Cyclones ahead of the 2024 season, Roehl spent 11 years at North Dakota State, including his final five as the team’s offensive coordinator. He was a part of seven Division I FCS national titles and eight Missouri Valley Conference championships with the Bison.
During his lone season in Ames, he helped the Cyclones to a program-record 11 wins. Iowa State also made its second Big 12 Conference title game appearance and won the Pop-Tarts Bowl in an offensive shootout against Miami.
He helped the Cyclones develop a three-pronged rushing attack, highlighted by the big step forward by Carson Hansen in his sophomore season. Hansen ran for a team-best 752 yards and 13 touchdowns. Abu Sama III was also a prominent running back, finishing with 587 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylon Jackson rounded things out with 388 yards and two touchdowns.
Overall, Iowa State ran for 2,247 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns as a team.
As a player, he was an All-American running back at North Dakota State, where he played from 2004-08.
This is the second year in a row that the Cyclones have seen an assistant coach make the leap to the NFL. Last year, Matt Campbell’s staff saw the departure of offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, who joined the Los Angeles Rams as a passing game coordinator.
The Detroit Lions went 15-2 this past season and won another NFC North division title, before suffering an upset loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional playoff round.
