Ohio State football’s search for the next defensive coordinator to replace Jim Knowles appears to be at an end. Originally reported by ESPN’s Pat Thamel and later confirmed by an OSU spokesman, the Buckeyes have hired former NFL head coach and Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia. We are still waiting for an official press release from the university.
As we somewhat suspected, this one came off the hot board of many sites and publications, but seems like a home run hire. Patricia’s last job was as a senior defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 and was out of coaching this past season, but he has the history and resume to make a splash on the banks of the Olentangy.
A native of Sherrill, New York, Patricia’s biggest claim to fame is the architect of the New England Patriots’ defenses under Bill Belichick where he was the defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017. His defenses often ranked among the best in the league and culminated with Super Bowl wins in 2014 and 2016. In 2014, in particular, the Patriots were the top-scoring defense in the League.
Like many other hires of assistants at Ohio State, Patricia also brings NFL head coaching experience. He was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 20120, and although things didn’t go so well there with a 13-29-1 record, there’s no replacement for understanding the big picture as the man making all of the decisions under the headset.
Before his pairing with Belichick, Patricia cut his coaching teeth as a defensive line coach at Amherst from 1999-2000, and as an offensive graduate assistant at Syracuse from 2001-2003. He now has big shoes to fill with keeping Ohio State’s defense among the best in the country, but the pedigree to seemingly get it done.
