In the weeks immediately after defeating Notre Dame and winning the 2024 College Football Playoff championship, Ohio State underwent significant, sweeping changes to its coaching staff, with Chip Kelly leaving to be the Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles taking the same role at Penn State, where he’ll be the highest-paid assistant coach in college football.
On Wednesday, one of those major vacancies was filled.
The Buckeyes and coach Ryan Day are in the process of hiring former Detroit Lions head coach and New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to take over for Knowles as defensive coordinator, The Dispatch confirmed Wednesday.

Patricia is a familiar name and face for many football fans, having roamed NFL sidelines for years with an omnipresent pencil wedged behind his right ear. Now, he’ll be taking over one of the most important assistant coaching roles in college football and will oversee a unit that lost seven starters from its title-winning squad.
With Patricia set to lead the Ohio State defense, here’s a closer look at the coach and what you need to know about him:
He’s a Super Bowl champion
Patricia made his name as a coach with the Patriots, working for the organization in various roles from 2004-17. In three of those seasons — 2004, 2014 and 2016 — New England won the Super Bowl.
Patricia was the defensive coordinator for two of those seasons, including for a Patriots team in 2016 that led the NFL in scoring defense during the regular season at 15.6 points per game. New England finished among the top 10 NFL teams in scoring defense in each of Patricia’s six seasons as defensive coordinator, from 2012-17.
