Oklahoma’s coaching staff may not quite be settled for 2025 just yet. In a surprise, Penn State emerged as a possible landing spot for running backs coach DeMarco Murray on Tuesday afternoon. Pete Nakos of On3 said the two sides shared a “mutual interest.”
Multiple sources tell On3 that Oklahoma assistant DeMarco Murray and Penn State have been in communication about the Nittany Lions’ open running backs job. There is strong mutual interest between Murray and Penn State, sources said. – Nakos, On3
However, late Tuesday evening OUInsider’s Brandon Drumm (Subscription required) reported that Murray would be staying at Oklahoma.
I can confirm that Penn State and OU spoke. A source directly tied to Sooners RB coach Demarco Murray and his camp called this evening to tell me that the Sooners all-time great RB and current RB coach is not taking the Penn State job. That could change, but source seemed pretty adamant on it. – Brandon Drumm, OUInsider
Drumm’s source noted that Murray is building a house in Norman and has had conversations with Penn State, the Dallas Cowboys, and other teams this offseason but remains committed to staying in Norman.
Murray has a strong running back room to work with full of promising blue-chip players. The Sooners return Jovantae Barnes, Gavin Sawchuk, Sam Franklin, Xavier Robinson, and Taylor Tatum from the 2024 squad and bring in four-star running back Tory Blaylock to add to a talented room for Murray to work with.
The Sooners made changes on the offensive side of the ball with new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle leading the way. That was the only change to occur with the offensive staff as Brent Venables and Arbuckle retained their offensive assistants.
Although it looks like Murray is set to return, this doesn’t feel like something that’s completely settled just yet.
