The Kansas City Chiefs are hiring former Wisconsin Badgers standout Chris Orr as their new linebackers coach, as first reported by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
The position will be Orr’s first in the NFL after he joined the coaching ranks as Jackson State’s linebackers coach last season. That move followed a brief playing career, with stops with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers (2020) and USFL’s New Jersey Generals (2022-23).
Between his NFL and USFL stints, Orr spent one year (2021) as Wisconsin’s director of player development under head coach Paul Chryst.
The standout linebacker played for Chryst and the Badgers from 2015-19. He appeared in 50 games during that time, starting 30. His production is up there with the program’s best at his position: 187 total tackles (100 solo), 14 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, two interceptions, eight pass deflections and two forced fumbles.
Orr’s best season came as a leader and captain of the 2019 Badgers: 14 starts, 78 tackles, 14 for loss, 11 1/2 sacks, five pass deflections and two forced fumbles.
The former Badger joins a Chiefs staff looking to redirect the team after its recent Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Orr will coach one former Badger on the Chiefs’ defense: linebacker Leo Chenal. The two players overlapped at Wisconsin in 2019: Orr, a fifth-year senior, and Chenal, a true freshman.
