Hattiesburg football hires Kendall Lacey as next coach, replacing Tony Vance

Hattiesburg football has hired Kendall Lacey as the school’s new coach the school announced on Tuesday.

Lacey comes from Georgia, where he coached defense the last two seasons at Valdosta High School. He replaces former Hattiesburg coach Tony Vance, who announced his retirement in December after 12 years. Vance had a 157-64 career coaching record.

Lacey said in a social media post,” I am excited and honored to be the next Head Football Coach at Hattiesburg High School. I have prayed for this moment and I am thankful to have this opportunity. Go Tigers!!”

Lacey was a part of the 2016 Valdosta team that won the Georgia High School Association Class 6A title. His coaching record includes stints at five high schools, including Valdosta, Benjamin Russell, Dothan, Jefferson Davis and Prattville. And two universities at Waldorf and Shorter.

He has served as defensive coordinator, assistant head coach, strength and conditioning coach and defensive backs coach.

Hattiesburg ended its 2024 season 13-1 and runners-up in the MHSAA Class 6A state championship, falling to Grenada 43-14. The Tigers’ last state football title came in 1924, but they have not won a championship in the MHSAA era.
