High school football: University names longtime assistant Matt Trumbly head coach

Patience paid off Wednesday for longtime University assistant football coach Matt Trumbly.

On staff for the last 11 seasons in a variety of roles, Trumbly was named the Titans’ head coach for 2025, athletic director Staci Hahn told The News-Journal. The 41-year-old will take over for Justin Roberts, who resigned Jan. 13 after going 19-5, capturing the school’s first district championship and advancing twice to the second round of the FHSAA playoffs in two years.

“When this opportunity came open, I listened to the kids, the parents, the community and the guys on staff. It became clear that I was a guy they trusted to lead the program,” Trumbly said.

Trumbly served as University’s quarterbacks coach over the past two seasons but also has experience as a co-defensive coordinator, co-offensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and position coach for wide receivers, defensive backs and linebackers. In addition, he has worked as a teacher in the school’s P.E. department for seven years.

“We are thrilled to have Matt step into the head coach position,” Hahn said. “He has tirelessly worked with the Titan football program since the opening of the school, always doing whatever was asked of him — both as a coach and an employee. His dedication to the program, his players and the community is unmatched. We are confident that Matt will return to the roots of Titan football, increasing community involvement and continuing to foster strong relationships with the players and families he’s been working with for over a decade.”
