Michigan football is certainly on the upswing after closing the 2024 season strongly, not just on the football field, but with the new players it’s bringing in.
The Wolverines did the unthinkable in two straight games — beating rival Ohio State (the eventual national champion) in Columbus and a full-strength Alabama team in the ReliaQuest Bowl. But with Bryce Underwood flipping from LSU, a strong recruiting class, and some key transfer portal additions, the maize and blue might have only had a one-year hiatus from the College Football Playoff.
An easier schedule than last year certainly helps.
But, all positions will need to pull in the same direction, yet not all are created the same. Though spring ball is still a month away, here is how we would rank each position group, taking into accounting our own rating of the roster at each position, as well as the coach overseeing that position.
T-1. Safety

Personnel: 9/10
Coaching: 9/10
LaMar Morgan did a masterful job last season with the entire secondary. Though the safety position wasn’t quite as good as anticipated in the preseason, it appears ready to reload this year.
With Rod Moore coming back from injury, Brandyn Hillman and Mason Curtis looking to step into bigger roles, and Arkansas transfer TJ Metcalf coming in, this position group looks loaded, experienced, and ready to take on any challenges it faces this upcoming season.
T-1. Defensive Line
TJ Guy and Derrick Moore
Personnel: 10/10
Coaching: 8/10
On equal footing at the moment with the safeties, the defensive line appears to be beyond loaded. Lou Esposito did a fantastic job, but without Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant and Josaiah Stewart, it’s a little difficult to tell how much the talent pulled him along.
