Texas hires Mark Orphey as safeties coach to replace Blake Gideon

The Texas Longhorns have found their replacement for Blake Gideon, hiring up-and-coming assistant coach Mark Orphey as their new safeties coach. Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com reported Wednesday night that Orphey, formerly the cornerbacks coach at Rutgers, is set to join head coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff in Austin.

“According to my sources, Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian has hired Rutgers CB coach Mark Orphey to replace Blake Gideon. Orphey, a North Shore grad, had strong ties to Houston. He’s viewed as an excellent hire for the Longhorns,” Richardson said via social media.

Orphey’s addition comes after Gideon departed last week to become the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech.

A native of Houston, Orphey has served as Rutgers’ cornerbacks coach since 2022, with previous stops at Alabama, Utah State, Montana State, and South Carolina. He began his coaching career in 2011 as the cornerbacks coach at Texas Southern.

Under Orphey’s guidance, Rutgers ranked 87th in the nation in pass defense last season. However, in 2023, the Scarlet Knights boasted a top-10 pass defense, helping the program secure its first winning season since 2014.
