Arizona State football team snubbed again as Cam Skattebo is lone NFL Combine invite

The Arizona State football team is being disrespected. Again.

Invites for the NFL Combine have come out and despite winning the Big 12 championship and taking heavily favored Texas into double overtime in the Peach Bowl, the Sun Devils will have just one participant — running back Cam Skattebo.

The combine is Feb. 27 through March 2 at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts.

Skattebo’s selection was a no-brainer. He was a first-team All-American, racking up 1,711 rushing yards, which broke the school’s single-season mark of 1,642 set by Eno Benjamin back in 2018. His 21 rushing touchdowns were also a single-season best. Skattebo was also integral in the passing game with 45 receptions for 605 yards and another three scores.

In the Big 12 championship game win over Iowa State and playoff loss to Texas, he rolled up 450 rushing plus receiving yards and accounted for six touchdowns, one a 42-yard pass in the Sun Devils’ double-overtime loss to Texas. He earned Offensive MVP honors in the Peach Bowl, marking the first time in 26 years that honor went to a player on the losing team.

The Sun Devils don’t have a lot of players who have entered the draft as they are set to return 36 players who were on their two-deep roster. Those who have exhausted their eligibility and who should have been in the mix for a spot though are center Leif Fautanu and safety Shamari Simmons.

Simmons, a 6-foot, 195-pounder, represented ASU in the East-West Shrine Bowl in January. He was the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2023 and the defensive MVP the past season, totaling 145 tackles, two interceptions, 10 passes defended, forced four fumbles and recovered two others in his two seasons in Tempe.

Fautanu has been the workhorse of the much-improved offensive line, starting every game the last two years. He played all but one snap in 2023…
