The Georgia Bulldogs are promoting defensive analyst Andrew Thacker to be their nickels coach. Georgia’s defense refers to nickels as the STAR position.
Thacker is a former defensive coordinator with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He served as Georgia Tech’s defensive coordinator from 2019-2023. He also served as the safeties coach for Georgia Tech in 2023 before becoming an analyst at UGA last season.
Thacker also previous served as Temple Owls’ defensive coordinator in 2018 and the Owls’ linebacker coach in 2017. Thacker has coached in college football or the NFL since 2008. He began his career as a graduate assistant with the UCF Knights. He even was an assistant with the Atlanta Falcons in 2014, so he brings a lot of experience to the table.
“(Thacker) was targeted for a job by another top program,” said 247Sports. However, now it appears he is staying at Georgia.
The Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart really value versatility in the secondary and tend to train both cornerbacks and safeties at the STAR position. Georgia’s projected starting STAR this fall is Joenel Aguero.
