New role on Georgia football staff for former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator

Former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker will have a new role on the Georgia football staff, according to a report.

Thacker will be the Bulldogs’ nickels coach, according to CBSSports’ Matt Zenitz.

Support staffers are now permitted to provide hands-on coaching.

A Georgia team spokesman could not immediately provide details on Thacker’s new position and if Georgia’s current 10 on-field assistants will remain the same.

Georgia has two defensive backs coaches among its 10 on-field assistants: Co-defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson coached safeties and nickel/Stars last season. Defensive backs coach Donte Williams coached the cornerbacks.

Thacker was defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech from 2019 until after the first month of the 2023 season. He also is a former defensive coordinator at Temple.

Thacker was targeted for a job “by another top program,” according to Zenitz.

“He does a great job,” coach Kirby Smart said in November. “He’s got a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Defensively, he’s been great for our defense in terms of energy, excitement, players really like him. He does a great job of knowing his role, of defining his role and being very helpful, and he’s been a big asset for us.”
