Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day won his first national championship when the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame last month.
Day joined a select few of active coaches with a championship ring. Only Day, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney can make that claim.
Could LSU football head coach Brian Kelly be next to join that group?
Kelly has come close before. In 2012, he led Notre Dame to a title game appearance, falling short against Alabama. That’s Kelly’s only. FBS title game appearance. He led the Fighting Irish to the playoff twice, but Notre Dame lost in the first-round both times.
With 195 wins, the only active coach with more wins than Kelly is Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz with 202. You don’t win that many football games on accident — Kelly can coach.
As Kelly enters his fourth year at LSU, he has one of the most talented rosters of his career. The Tigers return a Heisman candidate at quarterback in Garrett Nussmeier and five-star pass catchers Aaron Anderson and Trey’Dez Green. LSU went to work in the transfer portal, signing the top-ranked portal class in college football.
Along with the transfer additions, Kelly signed another top 10 high school recruiting class that features three five-star recruits.
When you look around the sport in 2025, there’s no obvious juggernaut like there was with Ohio State in 2024. The Buckeyes will be contenders with stars like receiver Jeremiah Smith and safety Caleb Downs, but there are questions.
Alabama is still working to reset without Nick Saban, and Georgia has quarterback questions. Oregon is losing quarterback Dillon Gabriel, along with a chunk of talent on defense. Penn State returns a lot, but loses its two best players with Tyler Warren and Abdul Carter off to the NFL.
