The Iron Bowl trophy made a short trip this year.
Short, as in not leaving the Alabama campus.
The trophy for the annual Alabama-Auburn football rivalry is presented each year at halftime of a UA-AU basketball game, but it hasn’t left the Capstone in quite a while. The Crimson Tide’s 28-14 win over Auburn last November secured it for another 365 days, and it was rolled to midcourt at Coleman Coliseum during Alabama’s much-anticipated home hoops game against the Tigers.
Here is the presentation, including UA Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, and several 2024 UA football players, including Jam Miller and Tim Keenan.
Alabama has won five consecutive Iron Bowls dating back to 2020. Legendary UA coach Nick Saban, weeks before he retired, won his final Iron Bowl, 27-24 at Auburn, with a stunning 4th-and-31 touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe to Isaiah Bond in the final seconds. Last year, new UA coach Kalen DeBoer won his first Iron Bowl, at Bryant-Denny Stadium, as the Crimson Tide got 360 total yards from Milroe in overcoming four turnovers.
Auburn’s last victory in the series came in 2019, a 48-45 home win.
Alabama and Auburn are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation in basketball, the first such matchup in SEC history. It’s also a higher dual ranking than for any Iron Bowl ever; the highest dual ranking in the football series was a No. 5 vs. No. 3 matchup in 1971.
