Updated SEC Basketball standings after No. 1 vs. No. 2 Alabama-Auburn showdown

The Auburn Tigers won Saturday’s clash between the nation’s two top-ranked teams with a 94-85 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum.

Star forward Johni Broome and company never trailed in the game. Broome had 19 points to lead Auburn, who was frankly the better team from start to finish against Alabama.

The Tigers will (more than deservedly so) be ranked No. 1 in both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP poll Monday. Bruce Pearl’s team is currently the projected No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and the favorites to repeat as SEC champions.

As for Alabama? As Nate Oats said after Saturday’s loss, they’ll need recover in a hurry with at trip to CoMo and a tough Missouri Tigers team up next in SEC play. Both Mizzou and Kentucky, Alabama’s next two opponents, got back in the win column this past week. The Tigers beat Oklahoma and Georgia while Kentucky got a much-needed win over a top-10 Tennessee team at Rupp Arena on Tuesday before a late collapse Saturday night against Texas in Austin.

In the Swamp, the Florida Gators continued on their tear through the SEC and should rise to No. 2 in the Top 25 polls. Todd Golden’s squad picked up their fourth straight win Saturday night against winless South Carolina and remains the only team in the SEC to have beaten Auburn. Alabama is scheduled to host Florida in the second to final game of the regular season on March 5.

Texas A&M continued to rise by winning its fifth straight game, 69-61 over Arkansas Saturday. A bit further down the standings, Mississippi State completed a season sweep of Ole Miss to snap a string of three losses in four games.

Before Monday’s new Top 25 polls are unveiled, here’s an updated look at the SEC standings after seven weeks of conference play.
