A reason why Arch Manning didn’t sign with Georgia football

The battle for Arch Manning was the biggest recruiting storyline of the class of 2023. The Georgia Bulldogs were major contenders, along with the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns. Of course, he chose the Texas Longhorns, and Arch’s freshman brother, Heid, explains the reasoning in an interview with 247Sports.

“I remember him asking a lot of questions away from football,” Heid Manning said via 247Sports. “Nothing about NIL dollars or the NFL.”

“He was asking, ‘Am I going to be able to get away and maybe go somewhere where people don’t recognize me as much?'” he said. “And out of Athens, Tuscaloosa and Austin, it’s easily Austin for that.”

At this point in time, Georgia and Alabama were the two biggest markets in college football. Georgia was in the midst of their back-to-back wins in the national championship game, while the Alabama Crimson Tide were SEC contenders in their own right with Nick Saban as their head coach.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns were coming off of an 8-5 season in the Big 12 with nowhere near the notoriety of the biggest SEC teams. Now, Texas is one of the top teams in the SEC, with two straight appearances in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Manning earned the keys to the Longhorns’ explosive offense after incumbent starter Quinn Ewers declared for the 2025 NFL draft. Safe to say, it doesn’t seem like he’ll have the privacy he desires in Austin this fall.
