Michigan football fans are increasingly excited about who Sherrone Moore brought in via the 2025 recruiting cycle — headlined by No. 1 overall recruit, quarterback Bryce Underwood — but they tend to be a little underwhelmed in terms of the transfer portal haul up until this point.
However, On3 sees things much differently than the fans do.
When it comes to Michigan’s recruiting ranking, the Wolverines finished at No. 6 overall, but it fared better than many might think, with the No. 10 transfer portal class in 2025. The headliner there is former Alabama running back Justice Haynes, but wide receivers Donaven McCulley and Anthony Simpson, as well as defensive tackles Tré Williams and Damon Payne, certainly could be instant impact type of players for the maize and blue.
On3 noted that there are only five teams in college football that have a top 10 ranking in terms of both recruiting haul and transfer portal class, and the maize and blue are one of those five.

For all the doom and gloom about Michigan this season, the Wolverines still finished 8-5 and beat both Alabama and Ohio State without a functioning quarterback room. Their NIL backers saw the glimmers of hope in Sherrone Moore’s first year and have gone all the way in to support him. They still landed a top-10 portal class, and that included missing on a few key targets.
But what they did late on the recruiting trail might ultimately prove to be the more impressive feat. Flipping Underwood, the country’s No. 1 QB, was a gargantuan win. Yes, NIL played a big factor. But a recruit with that level of talent isn’t going somewhere he doesn’t see leading to an an NFL future.
