Oklahoma Target wins UA Next QB MVP

Oklahoma has as strong a case as any to the QBU monicker. Four Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks since 2000 and the most recent Super Bowl MVP support the idea. The Sooners are hoping the top quarterback in the transfer portal can have the same impact that transfer quarterback Josh Heupel, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, and Dillon Gabriel have had this millennium.

Out of the recruiting ranks, Oklahoma has their 2026 quarterback committed in Jaden O’Neal and is attempting to add a second quarterback in Bowe Bentley. For 2027, the guy they have their sites set on is Louisiana native Peyton Houston. Houston, a four-star prospect according to Rivals, is considered the No. 2 quarterback in the class and has a chance to be a five-star prospect in the 2027 recruiting class. After his performance in the UA Next Camp in Dallas over the weekend, Houston’s stock is only going to continue to rise.

Houston dazzled onlookers with his performance, earning QB MVP Honors for the Camp. This came after a sophomore campaign in which Houston threw for 4,480 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He completed 70% of his passes and averaged 373 passing yards per game. He also ran for 690 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

The Oklahoma Sooners are in a good spot in his recruitment. Back in June, Parker Thune of OUInsider and Rivals issued a Futurecast favoring the Sooners for Houston. But they’ll have to fend off a number of Power Four teams. Houston currently holds 22 Power Four offers and is being pursued by SEC schools Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas, and Texas A&M.

If the Oklahoma Sooners are able to land a commitment from Houston, they’ll have their quarterback position set up for a long time to come.
