Wisconsin football is hiring Marcus Sedberry as its new general manager. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Monday afternoon, then later confirmed by both On3 and 247Sports.
Sedberry moves into the position after working within the Wisconsin athletic department for three years as a deputy athletic director and its chief operating officer. He previously held a similar administrative role at Baylor from 2017-22.
Sedberry fills a vacancy created when Wisconsin rising star GM Max Stienecker left for a similar position with the USC Trojans. Stienecker rose fast under Luke Fickell at Cincinnati from 2021-22 before following the head coach to Wisconsin. His promotion to general manager last summer made him the youngest (22 years old) to hold the title in the sport’s history.
Stienecker worked within and oversaw a Badgers recruiting department that recorded top-25 finishes in each of the last two cycles, creating big shoes for the new general manager to fill. Notably, Wisconsin’s new hire for the role comes from within the athletic department, though not from the team’s recruiting staff. Director of recruiting Pat Lambert was figured to be another potential candidate for the position.

The ‘general manager’ title carries more duties than ever before in today’s age of college football. Roster management includes NIL organization, high school recruiting, transfer portal recruiting and more. Those focuses are added to the administrative duties likely included in the job description.
