Could running backs coach E.J. Barthel leave Nebraska for the Texas Longhorns

Could Nebraska see a member of their coaching staff poached by a former conference rival? A recent report from Pete Nakos at On3 states that Nebraska running backs coach E.J. Barthel could be a candidate for the same position with the Texas Longhorns.

Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice departed the program earlier this month for the same title with the Detroit Lions. This comes after Choice declined the running backs coach job with the Dallas Cowboys. Choice had been a coach at Texas since 2022.

Barthel has been with the Cornhuskers since 2023. This past season, running backs Dante Dowdell and Emmett Johnson led the team in rushing yards with 614 yards and 598 yards, respectively.

He does have a connection to the Longhorns coaching staff. Barthel previously worked for Texas offensive coordinator Kyle Flood when Flood was the head coach at Rutgers. Barthel was the head of player development from 2013 to 2014.

Other names mentioned in the report are Georgia Tech’s Norval McKenzie and Baylor’s Khenon Hall.
