Notre Dame announces Ja’Juan Seider as running backs coach, associate head coach

Roughly ten days ago, it was reported that Penn State football’s 2025 coaching staff was receiving a significant shakeup with running backs coach and assistant head coach Ja’Juan Seider moving on to Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish officially welcomed Seider on board Tuesday afternoon, announcing the long-time Penn State assistant as Notre Dame’s new running backs coach and associate head coach.

“Ja’Juan is a great offensive mind,” said Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. “He has coached multiple offensive positions, but his ability to recruit and develop high level running backs is exceptional. His experience utilizing multiple running backs effectively within the offense and simultaneously turning them into NFL talent is one of several reasons why he is a great fit for our program.”

Freeman’s statement suggests that he wanted Seider for many of the same reasons that he suited James Franklin and Penn State so well. Seider’s ability to get the most out of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen was impressive this year, not to mention his ability to get both to commit to the program in the same recruiting class.

Seider’s departure came as a bit of a surprise, with both Singleton and Allen returning for their final season and Notre Dame giving him a title similar to the one he held at Penn State. Franklin and his staff moved quickly to find a replacement, tabbing Temple head coach Stan Drayton as the next man up. Drayton, a former running back, is an experienced running backs coach with stops at Ohio State, Florida, Texas and the NFL.

With Drayton now officially in the fold, he will have some big shoes to fill, especially on the recruiting front, with Seider now officially in South Bend.
