After just one full year in the SEC, the Texas Longhorns have established themselves as the second best program in the SEC. That’s according to CBS Sports’ Josh Pate. Each year, the college football analyst ranks the teams in each conference. This is his first ranking to include Texas and Oklahoma.
Of course, UT did finish second in the SEC in its first season in the super conference. So it may not be a stretch to rank them No. 2. But Pate says it’s more than just one year of game play. “It’s the best talent acquisition team in the league right now. Better than Georgia. I think they’re more effective at getting talent than Georgia right now,” Pate said.
Pate does have the Georgia Bulldogs at the top of his SEC rankings, but he places Texas ahead of SEC powerhouses like Alabama and LSU for several reasons. Resources are a big reason Texas has leaped to the upper echelons of the conference. “They’ve got the deepest resource pool. Better than Georgia,” he said. “But that vaults (Texas) that high. It vaults them over Alabama. Maximum commitment. Maximum investment.”
Pate is a fan of the Longhorns staff as well. He points to Texas coach Steve Sarkisian as the focal point of an organization that is excelling in the new league. “I think extremely highly of Steve Sarkisian. I think extremely highly of their roster,” Pate said. “I love where they’re at right now. I think right now in this moment it’s the No. 2 program in the SEC.”
