There currently appears to be a three-team race to win the Big Ten basketball regular-season title.
Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State are the primary contenders. Michigan (20-5, 12-2 Big Ten) currently leads the standings, followed by Michigan State (21-5, 12-3 Big Ten) 1/2 game behind and Wisconsin (21-5, 11-4 Big Ten) 1 1/2 games back. Purdue (19-8, 11-5 Big Ten) is just two games back but is falling fast after three consecutive losses. Maryland (20-6, 10-5 Big Ten) is the only other team with an outside chance at 2 1/2 games back.
The Badgers, Spartans and Wolverines have overwhelming odds to capture the regular-season crown, either shared or outright. The question then revolves around which team has the upper hand. KenPom, for example, ranks Wisconsin as the best team in the conference. That is different than which is favored to hold the trophy. Obviously, the final records will matter more than anything.
With only a few games remaining before the conference race is decided, here is what each team has left on its schedule. The Big Ten’s brass must be happy with the result because Michigan and Michigan State still have to play each other…twice.
Michigan (0 GB): vs. Michigan State, at Nebraska, vs. Rutgers, vs. Illinois, vs. Maryland, at Michigan State
Michigan State (1/2 GB): at Michigan, at Maryland, vs. Wisconsin, at Iowa, vs. Michigan
Wisconsin (1 1/2 GB): vs. Oregon, vs. Washington, at Michigan State, at Minnesota, vs. Penn State
Purdue (2 GB): at Indiana, vs. UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Illinois
Maryland (2 1/2 GB): vs. USC, vs. Michigan State, at Penn State, at Michigan, vs. Northwestern
