We are still re-living and reminiscing about one of the most memorable Ohio State football seasons in program history. One that shucked aside the disappointment of losing to arch-rival Michigan for the fourth-straight season to go on arguably the “greatest run in college football history” by sprinting through a four-game gauntlet to win the program’s ninth national championship.
The longest season of college football was fun and satisfying, so much so that spring practice has about snuck up on us all. In fact, the Buckeyes will be back at the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility on Monday, March 17, just eight weeks after hoisting the CFP National Championship trophy and dodging confetti.
But don’t get too excited — at least not if you are one of those who look forward to the annual ‘Spring Game’ that caps it all off. Instead of the traditional ‘Spring Game,’ according to head coach Ryan Day, the format will be changing, instead being called a ‘Spring Showcase.’ We haven’t been giving any information on what exactly that means, but it’s clear the extended season and grind of the new playoff model necessitates a change in how things are done. That event will be held on April 12 to close the door on spring football in Columbus.
“I think we have to be smart about how we handle this,” Day told a member of the Ohio State Board of Trustees at Monday’s Athletics Committee meeting. “When you look at the NFL model and they’re playing the number of games that they play in the NFL, we just played 16 games, so to think that we can continue with the same spring game or spring practice model, I think is asking for trouble, because of the amount of games now.
