Ryan Day discusses Michigan loss, Ohio State’s national championship run with Urban Meyer

Only a select few people in the world can relate to what Ryan Day has experienced over the past month after his Ohio State football team won a national championship.

This week, he took a moment to chat with one of the small handful of individuals who understands what he has been feeling lately — and it just so happened to be his former boss with the Buckeyes.

A few weeks into the offseason, Day joined former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, along with Mark Ingram, on Fox’s college football podcast, “The Triple Option,” to discuss the Buckeyes’ title and the eventful run that preceded it.

Naturally, the conversation shifted to what’s widely viewed as the beginning of Ohio State’s championship journey – its 13-10 loss to archrival Michigan on Nov. 30, a setback as a three-touchdown favorite that took a toll on players and coaches alike.

“When you don’t win that game, you don’t just wake up the next day and move on,” Day said. “Literally, there’s like a mourning phase and a grieving phase you have to go through. It’s just the way it is, man. There’s a lot that comes with that. You have to take a step back and let the emotion clear.”

What followed that, though, was a meeting with Day and his players in which they addressed what went wrong against the Wolverines and prepared for what awaited them in the playoff.

“We got everybody together because at that point, there’s narratives being thrown out everywhere,” Day said. “There’s all types of things going on, talking about players, talking about coaches. What’s going to happen? Are guys going to get fired? Who made mistakes in this area?…
