Southside Christian football hires Jonathan Gess, who has won championships in Georgia

Southside Christain football has hired Jonathan Gess, who won seven state championships as a coach in Georgia, to lead its program.

“This is an exciting day for Southside Christian School and our football program. SCS is dedicated to excellence both on and off the field and we firmly believe that Coach Gess will embody that commitment while leading our student-athletes” athletic director Mike Johnson said in a statement Wednesday. “He is focused on competing with integrity while creating a championship mindset for his players.”

Mike Sonneborn resigned last season after leading the program since 2017. He led Southside Christian to state championships in 2020 and 2021.

Last season, the Cavaliers finished 2-8 overall and 1-4 in Region 2-AAA.

Gess previously coached at Hebron Christian Academy and won two state titles. He also coached at Landing Christian Academy, where he became the first coach in Georgia history to win five straight football state championships.

Since 2011, Gess has had over 100 former players play college football, including 58 full scholarships, 32 with FCS teams, and 26 with Power Four programs.

“I could not be more excited to join the incredible tradition of Southside Christian football and work with you to restore the Sabre program back to among the best in the state,” Gess said. “I want to win football games, and we will. But my primary objective in life is to glorify God by building boys into men of Jesus Christ.”
