When taking a look at the Alabama Crimson Tide’s projected 2025 roster, there are certainly some holes that will be left to fill after players departed the program to either the NFL draft or transfer portal.
Because of this, the Crimson Tide and head coach Kalen DeBoer will be counting on some returning players to take the next step during the 2025 season, whether that be as either a starter or rotational piece. This will come across both sides of the ball as well, and will feature a few prominent positions where there could be pressure to perform in 2025 for a few names in particular.
However, who are some of those names in that conversation, and why could they be set to breakout next season?
Let’s take an early look ahead at five returning players for Alabama that could be set for a breakout season in 2025.

2024 Stats: 56 CMP%, 167 yards, 8 rushes, 44 yards, 1 TD
We begin with one of the more popular picks in Simpson, as the rising redshirt junior is likely the early favorite to takeover as Alabama’s starting quarterback as we look ahead to the spring. Simpson, who has been a backup in each of the last three seasons, is a former five-star prospect who has yet to throw for a touchdown over his 50 career pass attempts, but has seen success running the ball in limited action with three scores over the past two seasons.
Richard Young, Running Back
