The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Big Ten could find themselves on the right side of College Football Playoff expansion talks if the smoke and rumors continue to grow.
Right now, there is reportedly some momentum growing around expanding the College Football Playoff to 14 or 16 teams and with some caveats.
As reported by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports, expansion is a topic of discussion as athletic directors from the SEC and Big Ten currently meet. They are meeting to see if they can iron out a proposal to present to the College Football Playoff Management Committee later this month.
The rumored proposal for expansion would include automatic bids for the SEC and Big Ten as well as a larger field.
Leaders in each conference have spent the last several weeks evolving a format idea — multiple automatic qualifiers per league — into a more realistic proposal. The 14- or 16-team model would grant four automatic qualifiers each to the SEC and Big Ten; two each to the ACC and Big 12; and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. It includes one or three at-large spots, one of those intended for Notre Dame if it finishes ranked inside the top 14 — a guarantee specifically designated for the Irish that is part of the CFP memorandum. – Dellenger, Yahoo! This new format would lead to only the top two teams in the entire field receiving byes, a bit like the NFL playoff format.
The new format of four automatic bids in the Big Ten opens the door for teams like Iowa that find themselves right on the cusp of playoff contention, but not quite in the field.
The harsh reality of college sports is that revenue is also a driving force behind this move. The expanded playoff would drive more money to the Big Ten and SEC and make them the two-highest-paid conference in the sport.
