Florida State’s Kevin Sperry may be new to college football, but he has the confidence of a veteran player.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise to Seminole fans, though, as he models himself after former Oklahoma and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Sperry grew up a running back, but he made the transition in eighth grade to quarterback because he wanted the ball in his hands “every play.” He drew inspiration from Mayfield’s passion and playstyle and quickly became a top prospect before joining the Seminoles.
“I think the main thing about him is the intensity that he brings and the amount of passion he has for the game,” Sperry said. “I just feel like every team he’s been a part of he’s brought the best out of all his teammates… obviously he’s a great quarterback but the intensity is what I look at.”
A physical player, Sperry said he’s not afraid to challenge defenses in multiple ways.
“I bring a lot of swag to the game… a quarterback isn’t known for running somebody over,” he said. “I just feel like that brings a lot of energy to the team and a lot of energy to the sideline. That’s a part of my game, I think you see that in my high school film, and I’m excited to showcase that at the college level.”
Sperry initially committed to Oklahoma, the school that catapulted Mayfield to stardom, but after a carousel of offensive coordinator changes in Norman, the relationship he had with Mike Norvell helped flip him from Sooner to Seminole.

The decision came as a shock to some, but Sperry said FSU was always under serious consideration for him. So, when the opportunity to join the program came up, he didn’t hesitate.
