Throughout the 2024 college football season, there were a few plays in particular from the Alabama Crimson Tide that fans likely still remember, whether that be for a positive reason or not.
Taking a look at the latter of those two reasons, were there any plays that Alabama fans still remember for being negative for the Crimson Tide, and if so, which ones?
Well, on Tuesday morning, On3’s Pete Nakos released a list of what he considered as the 10 worst officiating calls during the 2024 college football season overall, and yes, Alabama did have a play mentioned.
According to Nakos, Jalen Milroe’s touchdown pass to Ryan Williams from the Oklahoma game that was wiped off due to an illegal touching penalty ranks No. 8 on the list. This was certainly a memorable play from the game for the Crimson Tide, as not only was it a very impressive catch from Williams, but the call being overturned took a score off the board, and felt like when it was overturned at the time, all hope of a potential Alabama comeback went away.
Nakos also gave some of his thoughts on the play from the Oklahoma game, saying:
“With Alabama trying to find momentum for a comeback at Oklahoma in late November, wide receiver Ryan Williams appeared to pull in an impressive catch,” Nakos said. “The touchdown was called off, however, as an illegal touching penalty was called on Alabama near the end of the play. If Williams’ touchdown had stood, would Alabama pull off the comeback? That’s an unknown.”
“But the 5-yard penalty resulted in a loss of downs, as Alabama went on to lose 24-3 to the Sooners. According to Rule 12, Article 8 of the NCAA Football rule book, illegal touching is a reviewable call.
