The Calvary Day Athletic Department held off on holding athletic signings in December and earlier this month in February so the standout athletes at the school could share the moment together with the Cavalier community.
The idea worked out well as eight athletes celebrated their signings in a ceremony on campus on Thursday.
The headliners included Thomas Blackshear, the star wide receiver who originally signed with Georgia back in December and his teammate, Walter “Buddy” Mathis Jr., the defensive lineman who had signed with LSU.
Here’s a look at the Calvary athletes who celebrated their signings on Thursday.
Thomas Blackshear, Georgia football
The ultra-talented receiver was one of the most sought after receivers in the country and signed with Georgia on the first early signing day in December, but wanted to hold off on his ceremony celebration so he could share the moment with teammates.
As a senior, Blackshear earned All-State first-team honors and was named the Region 3-3A Athlete of the Year. He had 47 catches for 1,042 yards (22.1 yards per catch) and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 83 yards and two more scores and returned a punt for a touchdown.
Jason Cameron, who took over as the Cavalier coach after Mark Stroud retired at the end of the season, worked with Blackshear closely as the team’s offensive coordinator over the last two seasons.
“He’s as fierce of a competitor that I’ve ever coached,” Cameron said. “And that goes from game nights to Monday through Friday at practices. He has a genuine hatred of losing and a great ability to lead. I think if he continues to work, we’ll see him playing on Sundays someday.
Blackshear, who started his prep career at Benedictine before transferring to Calvary before his junior year, said he is excited to take the next step in his career.
